Grand Bahama Dive Forecast – June 2011

The magic and color of Grand Bahama Island’s reefs awaits you.

Summer has arrived on Grand Bahama Island and the sea is sparkling under clear skies and wonderful breezes. Wet suits are in the closet; water temperature is in the mid 80’s and can only climb to warmer surface temperatures. The ocean is in full bloom; every single creature is taking advantage of the season and creating new life everywhere.

Reef dives should not be missed at this time of the year. Shallow water is so clear that the strong sunlight reaches all the way to the bottom and enhances all the colors of the reef. If you have never tried before, this is the time to hire an underwater rental camera and practice the art of photography. Whatever your choice of lens, wide angle or macro, the reef offers plenty of opportunities for artistic shots. Sharks never miss the opportunity to show up and wink at your camera, along with our resident groupers, jacks and snappers. Make sure to ask your dive guide to point out some of the ‘invisible’ habitants of the reef. They’ll point out a miniature metropolis buzzing with life:starfishes, nudibranches, crabs, shrimps, clams, mollusks of all sorts, juvenile fish, nesting octopus.

With the warm water, this is the best time to enjoy a slow dive, almost staying put in place to capture all of these beautiful creatures. And if you would like to learn how to identify all the sea life yourself, there is always the Underwater Naturalist Course, which focuses on the macro world of diving.
