May is a spectacular time for fishing in East Grand Bahama; there are lots and lots of fish in the narrow creeks and the miles of flats. The schools of bones are very large at this time of year. This is a good time for first-time bone fishers to come give it a shot because the chances to get some fish are excellent. If you are looking for some variety, there are lots of other species for you to target, such as permit, mutton snapper, barracuda, jacks and sharks; all are fun to catch and fight in their own special way. Just being on the flats in a boat or wading and seeing all the other sea life, like starfish, rays, and many other forms of marine life, is a fabulous experience. I am on the water all the time and I still marvel at its beauty and diversity.

To get the big one you need the right tools, so if you are a fly fisherman, I recommend an eight-weight rod and 10 to 12 pound test leader for bonefishing. If you’re going after permit, a 15 pound test leader would be good. Some of my favorite flies are Crazy Charlie’s and Gotcha Flats Flies in size 6-4.

Casting at about 30 feet or more will give you a better chance of getting a bonefish, because the bonefish are very spooky. They will only let the boat get so close before they “head for the hills.” If you are wading or are in a boat you need to be as “stealthy” as possible to get a good shot at these fish.
