September is a great time for bone fishing in the Northern Bahamas. It is still hot but the fish are beginning to move out of the larger schools into smaller groups of fish on the flats. This means that more action will be on the flats. Instead of just a few large schools, you will see small groups all over the flats. Here in East Grand Bahama, there is never a shortage of fish. With every season, the fish change the way they behave so a good fisherman and a good guide will make the adjustments necessary to what the fish are doing. The one important thing with fishing always remember to keep the fun in the game. That is why they call it fishing and not catching.
Your best fishing times will be early morning and afternoon/evening with a rising tide.
A thing to remember when you are using a guide who you have never fished with before, you should tell the guide how you would like to fish. Maybe you like to fish the large schools or the challenge of targeting the smaller schools. Also, let your guide know if you like to fish for other types of fish other than bonefish. In order for the guide to best do his job, you need to communicate. Tell your guide what makes you happy. For those who go fishing just a couple of times a year to a specific destination, you should fish with the same guide if at all possible. This way you will get to know your guide and your guide will understand your goal for the trip. As a fishing guide, I have clients who I have guided for years. I know what they like and do not like, but most of all we have a friendship and a relationship. When we fish together, we have fun talking and joking around with each other and I look forward to seeing them every year.
