Well it seems like we are having an early start to the schools of bonefish that move around the island collecting fish as they go for the spawning season. This usually would begin in mid-April, but we began seeing this pattern happen in early March.

From the looks of things, I see some fun in our future in Grand Bahama and in East Grand Bahama. Now let me warn you, there is a time for fishing and a time for catching, as we say in guide land and this is catching time.

For those who want to try bone fishing, this is a great time since the odds that you will get a fish are endless—only in the Bahamas! Come on get yourself geared up, and let’s go catching.

If you are having trouble with what rod to use, if you want to use a fly rod, I recommend an 8-weight fly rod with about a 10-to-12 pound test leader. Flies you may want to bring with you are Mantis Shrimp, the Gotcha, and Crazy Charlie’s. These are just a few of the popular bonefish flies, but these are proven “catchers” here in East End

If your preference is a spin rod, use 8-to-10 pound test line. Jigs or live bait, like shrimp or small crab, will work well.

Besides bonefish, there are other fun fish to catch on Grand Bahamas’ flats—permit, barracuda, mutton snapper, shark and jack)—just to name a few.
