Up until the middle of January, the winter was pretty mild. Since then, the cold fronts have been stronger. The average temperature has of course dropped and the water temperature is between 70 and 80 degrees which is perfect for bone fishing the miles and miles of flats in the East Grand Bahama area. Now that the water is cooling, the fish will tend to move to the deeper channels seeking warmer water. Typically at this time of year, most of the larger bonefish will be cruising the flats as “singles” or “doubles”, not in large schools. These singles and doubles will easily be in the ten pound range. There are a number of great species to target in addition to bonefish. In February, you will find plenty of permit, barracuda, jacks, mutton snapper and more for your fishing pleasure. East, west and in-between, Grand Bahama Island is a fisherman’s paradise. Come and visit and see for yourself—there are plenty of bonefish waiting for you!
