Grand Bahama Offshore Fishing Forecast – June 2012

Fishing Team Matchless, comprised of David Mellor, Thomas Bates, Siobhan Antoni-Bates, Brad Thompson, Isabella Thompson and Bill McGonigal show the yellowfin tuna are biting – 14 fish ranging from 42 to 75 pounds! PHOTO CREDIT : Old Bahama Bay.

The winds are dying down and the tuna are biting in Grand Bahama. Great reports of large yellowfin tuna are coming out of Tuna Canyon (15 miles south of Freeport). The technique that has been working best is finding the birds, going up current and chumming with cut bait. Then wait for the tuna to come to you. I’m still a big fan of the old school cedar plug, also. To “dress it up” I will add a feather skirt where it only covers the hook and leaves the cedar exposed; trolling at a speed of 7 to 8 knots works best.

For those anglers looking for a great tuna adventure, I have a feeling that this summer is going to be an epic season for yellowfin tuna in the waters surrounding Grand Bahama. There should also be plenty of dolphin for the cooler. For those that like to bottom fish from time to time, the grouper and snapper bite should continue to stay strong.
