Since Hurricane Irene left the Bahamas, the morning seas have been as calm as can be. There is a slight current consistently running from the north. Schools of bonito and blackfin tuna are still migrating through the Northern Bahamas and are a great combination for a day of great offshore fishing. Getting out on the water at sunrise or on overcast days seems to be best. On a recent morning outing, our surface baits rigged with ballyhoo got action quickly. Fish On! Trolling back and forth off the wall, we reeled in several 10 pound bonito in no time. Now for some blackfin tuna. We trolled out a bit deeper with some dark feathers and voila! Sushi time! Dolphin are also still out there in the early mornings in about 400 to 600 feet of water. In the evenings, yellowtails are biting and the key is to use live bait or chum. Also, there have been occasional wahoo biting. The wahoo action should pick up as we work through October. We are finally past the summer doldrums and offshore action will begin to consistently improve. With the possibility of some early cool fronts, Grand Bahama Island should come onto its own this month.
