[dropcap]I[/dropcap]am pleased to say that on our recent trip to Old Bahama Bay, West End, the wahoo catching conditions were what we have been anticipating. Water temperatures were consistently 78-to-79 degrees with a good strong north current. The winds were out of the southeast 15-20 knots causing erratic sea conditions. This makes for good wahoo fishing. The lures with the most action were black/purple, black/red, orange/red, and blue/pink down deep. The deep lines had wahoo belly strips behind the lures. We trolled 9-10 knots and had the most bites the first few hours of the outgoing tide.
We caught wahoos in the 40-to-50-pound range and look forward to even larger fish in February, which is my favorite month for large wahoo in the 100-pound range. You will start seeing more dolphin, blackfin tuna, and occasional blue marlin.
This is a time of year to check your weather forecasts very carefully as the Gulf Stream can get really rough.
