Grand Bahamas Dive Forecast – September 2012

Continually monitoring the Atlantic tropical storms to make sure they are not coming our way, we enter one of my favorite months of the year. Following a very warm August, the ocean is at its warmest with temperatures in the mid 80’s. At this time of the year, very few divers elect to wear a wetsuit. The beginning of school has taken a lot of the travelers back home and the boats have fewer divers on board.

One of the best features of this month are the little silversides covering most of the local wrecks as well as hiding in the numerous swim throughs of Caves, Blair House and Little Hales Lair. Their presence attracts a lot of predators: groupers, snappers, lionfish and jacks. It is a good opportunity for photography or for simply observing a variety of local marine life.

Ever present around our dive sites are the local Caribbean reef sharks. Rarely is there a dive during which divers will not be able to observe, photograph and share the dive with our resident population. It is not uncommon to spot on the same dive, rays and turtles surrounded by numerous species of local reef fish.

Grand Bahama Island offers many undersea adventures. Come and explore our island.
