H ello everyone and I hope when you read this you’re complaining about the heat. The cold winter and spring has put the start to our long awaited spring fishery back a course of weeks.
During warmer periods a few browns, young kings, and mature steelhead have been caught near the river mouths and near power plant discharges. Trolling with small spoons and body baits have been best but it’s too early to pick a pattern.
Kings should start to arrive in our area by the middle of May. When they get here look for larger fish to show up in deeper waters, around 200 feet, and expect to find the near bottom where mature alewives will be schooling and preparing to move shallow to spawn. When fishing deep, large paddles and white/mirage pattern flies are generally a good combo to start with. If you have the space, run plenty of gear up high with bright spoons to catch migrating coho and steelhead as they make a tasty bonus.
Good luck everyone and we hope to see you on the water soon!
