Summertime is soon to unwind and to the fair weather angler, get off the couch and go catch some fish! This nice weather isn’t going to last very long.
With the warm water temperatures we are finding an abundance of soft shell crayfish. This is the time of year they grow and this is the time of year you want to use them. We are the only sporting goods store around the sells live soft shell crayfish. Stop by and stock up to see the madness they bring to the end of your line. Run them with a flat, no roll sinker. When the fish picks them up they don’t feel the weight of the sinker and then it’s time to put the hammer down and set the HOOK! FISH ON! One thing I like about soft shell crayfish is that they are a part of many different fish’s diet. Just to name a few, catch large mouth, small mouth, northern pike, or BIG trout using soft shelled crayfish.
In the mornings, I like chasing the top-water fish using buzz baits, spooks, and any type of body bait. The catfish are still going strong hitting on crayfish, live suckers, creek chubs, cut bait, and don’t forget the leech and crawler combo!
With the warmer water, look for a nice cool spring creek dumping in the river or lake. You’ll bust a pike putting his nose in there. Target key areas and you’ll find the fish to be caught. Don’t forget about your turtle traps and frog spears, good times to be had there!
Try crappie fishing at night with lights. They have all different types of fishing lights or even use a lantern to shine the light in the water. The minnows will start coming around and the fish will be right behind them wanting an easy meal. It’s a great way to fill your cooler for a good fish fry!
The salmon are starting to come in the river and the coho’s, the brown trout, and the chrome favorite STEELHEAD are coming right with them. This time of year, I keep an eye on the Big Lake. When we get a hard north wind or east wind, it will flip the lake over and that’s when we get that 50 degree water at the piers heads. Some of the top action of the season can be found on the pier heads of Grand Haven to Grand Rapids and the tributary’s that connect them all. Use shads, spoons, spinners, and flies and don’t forget about cranking them out with thunder stick juniors and Rapalas. Bobber Down! Another great way to catch fish in holes this time of year is skein and floats. Find the seams and fish the current edges.
We are booking salmon trips and goose and duck season starts soon. We do have a few more spots open for our 13,000 acres of private land that we hunt for those southern Ohio monster bucks. Let us know if you want a trip. We will put you where you want to be! Take care, God bless, and get a fish on!
