My first experience with an inflatable kayak was paddling a “ducky” many years ago down the Nantahala River in western North Carolina. It was a small raft in the general shape of a kayak and handled as such. Fast forward 35 years later, and I am now getting asked about inflatable kayaks and SUPs quite often. The growing interest in inflatable paddle craft is caused by a few factors. Paddling in general is exploding in popularity. Some of our local paddle retailers are struggling to keep up with the demand as new paddlers shop for gear. Everyone wants to get out on the water.
Probably the No. 1 reason people are interested in inflatables rather than traditional paddle craft is convenience. Being able to throw an inflatable into a small car is a big plus compared to needing a roof-rack system for traditional paddle craft. Also, storage space can be a factor. Almost everyone can find a couple of square feet for an inflatable that is deflated and stored in its bag. A 12-foot SUP or kayak is a different matter. Being able to store an inflatable paddle craft in a small apartment, dorm room, or even the office has advantages and increases paddling opportunities.
Increasing popularity also may be due to improved manufacturing methods and materials. Inflatables are lighter, tougher and more rigid than in the past. Improved pump designs have made inflation much less labor-intensive as well. With some research, you can find a quality paddle craft. Look for multiple layers of material, good stitching and positive reviews about quality and customer service. Try to find reviews written by people who have owned their paddle craft for more than a few days and are using it the same way you will. The Body Glove Porter is a great option for me because it can be used as a kayak or SUP and it is easy to jump in and out of the water because it lacks sides and a cockpit. It also has a real seat and foot-pegs which many other inflatable kayaks lack.
A Body Glove Porter inflatable kayak and Body Glove Performer iSUP will be given away as prizes in the upcoming 17th annual Calusa Blueway Kayak Fishing Tournament. This premier paddle sport-fishing tournament takes place in Southwest Florida and highlights the waterways of The Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail in Lee County. Every season there seem to be more inflatable models from which to choose. Find the one that works for you and hit the water.
