Lake Oconee Forecast: Sept 2013

Striper and hybrid fishing is still in the summer pattern. Early and late in the day, look for schooling fish chasing shad on top. A popping cork with a small trailer will be the best option. The bait these fish are chasing are small, so match the hatch. Most of these schools will be located in the middle to south end of the lake. During the month of September, the best bet to fill a cooler with fish is to go crappie fishing. The crappie will be tight to cover. You will need good electronics to find the fish in the timber. A Lowrance HDS Structure Scan will be your best friend for locating these schools. Once you locate the schools, drop a minnow down to the fish. Make sure you take enough minnows with you. You can go through several dozen minnows in a day trip. Make sure you keep the minnow above the fish, as they only feed up, not down. These fish can be as deep as 25 feet up to 5 feet. So keep moving until you find them. If you would like to fill your cooler with crappie, give me a call and lets go fishing.
