As November draws near, so does the start of another exciting Bahamas fishing season. Long Island remains a relatively untouched region, which promotes very strong fishing grounds. The wahoo and mahi-mahi will begin to migrate through the waters of Long island, with wahoo being the main target. We have also been lucky to catch the odd yellowfin tuna still hanging around our waters.

There is very little bird activity on the water during this time of the year and so the preferred tactic for all around success is to slow troll fresh ballyhoo with Islander Lures at 8 knots. We prefer to zig-zag along the edge between 250 and 600 feet of water. If you have a planer or downrigger system, we have seen the best results when setting it to 50 feet deep. Once set, get ready for the wahoo to start their bite. One thing to keep in mind is that due to different shark species being around we like to troll at least 50 class reels with 80 pound line. This ensures that our gear can take the force of a shark’s bite.

Targeting the northeast side of Long Island on the Simms Bar is a consistent hot spot for all around species. The best time of the month is three to four days before a full moon with a gentle east-northeast breeze. This seems to produce plenty of bites. Beware of a southwest wind. Experience shows that the bite dies right off. If you find yourself fishing the island during a southwest wind, it is better to do some deep dropping for snapper and grouper or even the possibility of a swordfish or escolar.
