Looking in the rearview mirror, it was a mild summer this year in Long Island with only a few really hot days. The fishing was exceptional, with only a few anglers on the flats to take advantage of the beautiful conditions and lots of hungry bonefish eager to eat any fly cast to them. There were hardly any spooky fish on the flats. The anglers who took the advice to travel and fish these past summer months were so happy; they had the flats all to themselves. After a great experience, many are already booking for next year. There was a lot of good size fish and in good numbers. If this can be any indicator, the fall will be a very productive season. So, my advice is do not put off your bookings, get everything you need and get down to Long Island and experience a saltwater fishing experience like nothing you’ve ever had. Come take a shot at the grey ghost of our Bahamian flats. Remember you wade most of our flats in Long Island barefoot. Also do not forget to bring your barracuda rig as there are a lot of those bad boys around on the flats. The green, yellow and pink tube jig is doing well on the fly rods so pick up a few on your way. We are waiting for you on Long Island!
