[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ctober is a tricky month for pelagic fishing. Some years the fish will migrate through strong and start the season early and some years they will not show up until November. Planning any pelagic trip three days or so before a full moon is always your best shot for a good bite. The wahoo and mahi start making their way past Long island. We also see sailfish, and from time to time a mako shark might show up. For the most part, October is still the month where you focus on bottom fishing or spearfishing. A lot of spear fishermen travel to Long island for the opportunity to break a world-record and to simply enjoy spearing some decent fish and making some life long memories. Spearguns are not allowed in the Bahamas so we use pole spears and Hawaiian slings. Among a lot of equipment, the Guerrilla Sling from Headhunter Spearfishing has become our favorite weapon of choice. It has a bigger advantage over a pole spear or other traditional sling in that the range is almost triple when rigged with a heavy duty rubber. We have taken many nice fish with spear and sling and favor the sport of it over a speargun any day. If you are looking for an awesome vacation with action packed fishing and spearfishing, Long island is the place to be. Tight lines!
