Now that most of the fishermen have left these sunny islands to go north to fish their favorite trout stream, the flats of Long Island are almost completely empty except for all these bonefish. This is the best time to have the flats to yourself. More bonefish also means more barracuda. We also have an abundance of reef fish, which will please the entire family with a fishing and picnic trip. The weather will no longer be cool enough to fish your usual 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. day of fishing. The summer fishing pattern of early morning and late afternoon is here; so fish those tailing fish at sunrise and sunset. With less pressure on the fish, your fly selection is not that important right now. What is important now is a good presentation. We are seeing more small pods of fish instead of the large schools of previous months. It seems they have stopped congregating to spawn and have taken to the flats in a lot of small groups, so this means more shots at more groups and more single fish.
