May brings a large variety of fish to target. The mahi-mahi and tuna bite is picking up, the wahoo are still making their way through the Bahamas, and there are bottom fish such as grouper to catch. The wahoo bite will be a little slower in May compared to previous months, so your focus should be on the mahi-mahi and tuna. Mahi-mahi will bite almost anything, but it would be best to rig up some ballyhoo with different colors of skirts. Blue skirts are usually a good bet. Schools of yellowfin tuna have been coming through the area as well. We have seen the best bite on one of our trips to Diana Bank, which is always a great place to catch fish. Other areas off of Clarence Town and near Simms Bar have produced some excellent catches of grouper and snapper. With water temperatures increasing we will also have more billfish in the area. Our fishing spots remain the same, and we will continue to focus on using a mix of trolling and live bait.

Fishing conditions will improve as the month goes on. The winds will be east to southeast, seas will diminish, and the rain will be fewer and farther apart. And don’t forget that the Long Island Regatta is just around the corner! Many of our residents are working towards the Regatta which takes place the first week of June. Come join us on Long Island for some great fishing and awesome cultural events Tight lines!
