March can provide some very productive fishing in the coastal waters of Volusia County. Our primary targeted species for this month is Sheepshead along with Black Drum, Snook, Redfish and Pompano. This is the time of year when I see the most quality and quantity sheepshead being boated in our area, with fish over 5 pounds being caught regularly. I prefer a slow-moving incoming tide and will fish with natural crustacean baits including shrimp, sand fleas or fiddler crabs on a light jig-head when the fish are suspended, or a ‘fish-finder’ rig when they are holding near the bottom.
There has also been some consistent redfish and snook action in the backwaters of the Halifax River. Focus on the deeper banks, oyster bars and downed branches and you will find the gamefish.
