[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ctober will be a great time to fish all over Topsail. The Spots and Red Drum will be the main focus for most anglers. When the weather gets chilly the Spots and Reds go on the feed. Topsail’s Piers are a great place to look for them especially on a North East wind. Surf fishing for Speckled Trout will begin as well. Many beds will be empty with anglers in search of Specks under the cloak of darkness. Live shrimp are of course the easiest way to catch specks but they are expensive and sometimes hard to come by. I prefer lure and Fly fishing for them. Mirrolures in the 52M, 17M, 18MR and TT series are always hot. Probably the best all round color is the 808. Gulp works well too I did very well last year with the white swimming mullet. The fly’s I use in the surf mimic those same colors but make sure you have a shooting basket and a sinking line.
The New River will come alive as well. We will be seeing great numbers of specks this month coming from Southwest Creek and French’s Creek. The 172 bridge will also be a great place to look for them. The 14m Mirrolure will be a good choice as well as Vudu Shrimp.
We should also have some very nice Sea Mullet in the surf as well. Sand Fleas will usually be the bait of choice for these large winter fish. If you can not find Sand Fleas fresh Shrimp will work almost as well. Bloodworms can work well at times but Sand Fleas are the key. The big Black drum should be mixed in the Sea Mullet as well. We have seen some real bruisers caught here in November over the last 2 years and we are talking 40 lb +.
October is also prime time for Kings. 15 miles is usually a good place to start looking for great numbers of school fish. If you feel froggy the Wahoo bite should be on fire as well. There should be some decent Yellowfin action also.
October is a great time to fish topsail and the water temps look like they will hold out so that the fishing season might even be extended this year on in to November. So Tight Lines and Fair Winds Yall.
