Targeting kingfish in June has produced some awesome catches in depths from 60-120 feet of water. I’ve caught some slobs really shallow in the 60-70 foot range, which is perfect for offshore kayak anglers. Try slow trolling with a downrigger mid depth for killer results. On your top bait you can even catch some nice spanish mackerel, which is always a treat.
June has produced some of my biggest mahi mahi catches to date. Once, I caught a 40lb dolphin in 130 feet. Right now the mahi fishing has been on fire, with kayak anglers catching consistent 15-20 lb dolphin from 140-300 feet. My tip is to always use the kingfish set up to target mahi mahi. Use 30 lb mono leader to a short piece of wire with a 3/0 j hook and the always important stinger. These fish can be tricky to land and come off the hook easy without the stinger. Using a short wire will not hurt the success of your catch.
Wahoo fishing is strong in June around the moon and on deep wrecks. Many anglers jigging on the deep wrecks for big amberjacks have gotten lucky with a nice wahoo. The morning bite is key. The sooner you make it out, the better chance of your early wahoo bite, especially on an outgoing tide. Make sure if you’re heading out before first light you have all your kayak safety equipment. Having a light is key. For my rig with live bait I use the same as stated above. With a jig try going with purple with dark stripes or the popular pink. For amberjacks, I’ve done well with a green or yellow glow in the dark color.
Blackfin tuna are in full swing in the month of June on the jig and using live bait. I’ve caught most of my jumbos drifting over the deep wrecks from 200-280 feet. The pink jig has always been my go to bait for blackfins.
Before heading out for all these awesome pelagics, try using a top water Yo-Zuri and putting out a line on the beach for a shot at a nice tarpon or snook. This time of year they are running up and down the beaches.
