Gino’s 42” 28 lb. catch on light tackle just before reviving releasing.
For the serious anglers, September marks the start of what we know as the fall run. This is the time to stock up and respool that tired line. Don’t be that angler that tells yet another story of the big one that broke off during the extended battle.
This season has been one surprise after another and, on my account, a good one for the books. Maybe not great in terms of nice-size fish…but for catching and racking up some serious numbers, the season’s been solid, for sure.
Who would have guessed that we would have been catching flounder on the flats in August? That’s right; the couple of boats you wrote off as fools on the flats while steaming out to catch stripers were in fact still catching blackbacks.
The reports coming in of double- digit schoolie days are very encouraging for future anglers. Sure, we all want to catch thirty-pounders, but don’t pass up the opportunity to tackle down and break out the light gear for some real fun. The smaller fish provide a great chance to try those lures you have in the tackle bin that have not seen the light of day since you bought them.
Schoolies can be tough to tempt at times, so practice and pay attention to what works and what doesn’t. Don’t be surprised when you hook into a big girl, and she takes you all the way to the last few turns of backing before you can turn her and get some line back. If that doesn’t get your heart pumping and keep you coming back for more, then maybe you should take up golf.
Those of you looking for the black sea bass from last year will have to put in some time and seek out those rock piles for keeper-size fish. It’s not as easy as it was last year, but there have been several reports of tautog on the scouting missions.
September is some of the best weather the season has to offer—take advantage of it! The bite is changing all the time, so don’t hesitate stop by for some tips and recommendations on where to go.
