October proved to be another great month of fishing with both reds and trout caught on artificials, live bait and fly. Pinfish, live shrimp, finger mullet and chunked mullet will be the “go to” natural baits. Topwater lures such as the skitterwalk and Bait A Bait will get both reds and trout. The shrimpy patterns are the flies for redfish, most notably the Borski Fur Shrimp or Slider. November brings us into Florida’s winter. Bring a jacket, the mornings can be coolish. Forecasting fronts should be a high priority for every angler fishing this time of year, for safety and successful outings. Water temperatures and water levels will be dropping in the Lagoon. Striped (black) Mullet, the big shoreline loafers, and loose schools on the grass flats will be leaving the Lagoon during the cold fronts. Finger mullet will still be around for awhile but by the end of November they can get hard to find. Top water action “walking the dog” can still bring some exciting strikes, mostly early in the morning. If you fish a school of reds with top-water lures expect exciting “blow-ups” when they go for your plug. Watch your aim, it’s easy to spook the school if you’re not careful with your casting. Big trout will be eating and going into spawn.
