Nassau Dive Forecast – March 2012

For divers seeking wreck diving, there are wrecks on the west side of Nassau, and on the north side of Paradise Island. Sites like Shipyard Wreck, De La Salle, and the Miranda.

Diving in Nassau is very easy; major dive operators are here to guide you. For shallow reef dives, there are the Fish Hotel, off Salt Cay, and the Cannonball and Thunderball reefs, the latter named after the James Bond movie that was filmed there. These two reefs are located on the north side of Rose Island. They are laden with snappers, crustaceans, moray eels, sea fans and many other hard and soft corals.

Let’s not forget about Athol Island, which is also ideal for shallow dives, teeming with abundant angelfish, parrotfish, sponges, and damselfish. The sergeant majors are always trying to get in front of the camera lens, and enjoy giving you a little love bite every now and then. These two island sites are located just to the northeast of Nassau, with a short boat ride through historic Nassau harbor to get there.

For divers wanting deeper dives, there is the Blue Hole dive, where the perimeter begins at 40 feet, with the diameter being 100 feet and the depth 200 feet. The Blue Hole is dotted with isolated coral heads at the perimeter, and holds very active marine life. Here you will see large schools of reef fish, chromis, groupers, giant southern stingrays, eels, turtles, and snappers. This site is located on the south side of Rose Island.

For divers seeking wreck diving, there are wrecks on the west side of Nassau, and on the north side of Paradise Island. Sites like Shipyard Wreck, De La Salle, and the Miranda are all located on the Paradise Island north side. And lastly, the LTC wreck, located on the south side of Athol Island, is ideal for a shallow dive or snorkeling if the tide is right. It’s an old World War II troop carrier that sits upright in 20 feet of water, and is a wonderful site for observing large schools of fish.
