February is a beautiful month on the flats. Temperatures are cool making for comfortable conditions for angler and fish alike. Cool water makes for aggressive feeding and stronger fish. Tip from the guide: These long powerful runs of a bonefish can be 100 yards or more and if you are new to flats fishing, technique is everything. Rod tip low to the water and fighting the fish side to side is crucial in landing a big bone. When the fish makes the turn back to toward you, the large arbor reel will pay off in spades when you are trying to pick up line. However, no reel can keep up with the speed of a bonefish. This is where the low rod tip creates a bow in the line holding the pressure on the fish and keeping her on the hook.
I recommend a 9 weight in the winter because you will experience cold fronts with windy conditions from time to time when shots at large fish abound. We are fishing larger crab patterns with heavy eyes and swimming them quickly. These larger flies are like candy to the big fish and small ones have no trouble inhaling them. Pack a waterproof jacket and a thin thermal undershirt to stay as dry and warm as possible and if you hit that perfect winter day, just enjoy and lather up the sun goop.
Tight lines!
