Nassau Offshore Fishing Forecast – April 2012

There have been great signs of a number of billfish showing up recently.

The offshore fishing has been awesome. Despite the northeast winds being around 15 to 18 knots at times, we are still getting out and doing some fishing.

When trolling just out front of Nassau, we have been finding a lot of weed lines and floating debris where the mahi-mahi and wahoo are hanging out. Finding birds are a great help in finding the fish, also. Trolling at speeds around 7 to 9 knots to get your baits and favorite lures popping out of the water is a great way of enticing the fish into your spread and onto your hook.

There have been great signs of a number of billfish showing up recently; I released a few sailfish and white marlin over the last couple of weeks. Using my favorite Ilander lures of pink and white and blue and white, rigged with ballyhoo, have been producing a great number of bites from other gamefish, also. The mahimahi (dolphin) are showing up a little early, meaning April will be a great month for them to really start schooling up strong. We have been finding the fish from 2 to 10 miles offshore, so you can be catching fish in just a few minutes. Thirty pound tackle is a great set up and a lot of fun for catching these fish, and is a lot lighter to handle, especially when the school is around the boat. So the month of April is looking good from this charter captain’s perspective. Fewer wahoo, but lots of dolphin and more billfish.
