[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ishing has been phenomenal and I expect January to be no different. There have been great and numerous catches of wahoo and a few mahi-mahi around the ledges of Nassau and New Providence. The fronts have been driving them on the ledges in good numbers and a lot of flying fish have been seen. That’s a good sign that there is a good abundance of bait around for the “hoo’ to prey upon. We even had some nice tuna being caught on our offshore trips in the range of 30 to 80 pounds. The wahoo have been ranging from 10 to 70 pounds, so you need to make sure your gear is in great shape because these speedsters will strip some line off those reels. Trolling 8 to 10 knots with ballyhoo is my preferred method of catching them. But if you feel like weeding out the smaller ones and focus on the “big boys”, you can pick up the speed to 14 to 16 knots with the wahoo lures out and wait for the strike. With high speed trolling you will need to break out the heavier tackle because it puts lots of strain on your gear.
The fishing around Nassau will be great in January. Just pray to the Wind Gods to be kind to us se we do not have issues getting offshore. Tight lines—see you in Nassau.
