Nassau Offshore Fishing Forecast – July 2012

The months of July and August should be prime for tuna fishing around Nassau. PHOTO CREDIT: Capt. Teddy Pratt.

As we go into July, we hope to see some bigger tuna than the ones we’ve been hooking in June. The wind and the seas have been pretty good to us so far, and the occasional summer rain showers have been helping to cool down summer’s warmer temperatures a bit. Large flocks of birds have been right out in front of Nassau and Paradise Island, anywhere from one to ten miles out and even further. The smaller tuna and skipjack are here in great numbers. Don’t get me wrong, these fish are a lot of fun to catch on light tackle and you never know when the bigger ones will show up!

I have been getting some reports of some nice tuna being caught off the northern tip of Eleuthera but the sharks have been a big problem in trying to land a whole fish. A few mahi-mahi are being caught while fishing for tuna. Finding birds are the key to getting in on the action, so be prepared.

If you spot small tuna, put out the light tackle. If you see bigger tuna, rig up some heavy tackle. I mostly prepare for the bigger tunas. Sometimes there might be a shark around that will take your prize catch, so you always have to keep the heat on (keep reeling). Ballyhoo or your favorite tuna lures or both are a good mix for catching tuna and dolphin. While billfish marlin or sails have been scarce, you never know what’s mixed up in these schools of fish or feeding on them so you always have to be prepared for the big ones.

The months of July and August should be prime for tuna fishing, so see you in Nassau. Tight lines! If you want to fish Nassau, “fish with Teddy”!
