The fishing has been great so far, and going into the month of May it should be tremendous. There has been a great number of billfish showing up just “out front”; we have released quite a number of sailfish and white marlin. A significant number of small tuna have been showing up also, which is one of the main food sources for marlin. A mixture of skipjacks and small yellowfin tuna are out in great numbers, so fishing for them with light tackle is great fun. Looking for the birds will get you on them, but using a good pair of binoculars or a good radar will make it a lot easier to find them.

The mahi-mahi are still around, so finding the weed lines and birds should be productive. Trolling ballyhoo and lures is one of my favorite rigs to use, along with tuna plugs. Most of the fish have been one to ten miles offshore. Sometimes trolling the ledge can produce a wahoo or two, but the wahoo bite has been on the decline, as expected. On the longer offshore trips we have been catching some large mahi-mahi and a few yellowfin tuna in the 40 pound range. We are hearing from some of the guys fishing a few of the nearby (or not so nearby) islands 40 to 60 miles from New Providence that they are getting some bigger ones up to 80 pounds plus.

May is a fantastic month for fishing, with fair weather and lots of sunshine, so pack your sunscreen and come prepared to catch some nice fish.

Tight lines everybody, and when you come to Nassau don’t forget to “Fish with Teddy!”
