Nassau Offshore Fishing Forecast – October 2011

A nice day’s catch of yellowfin tuna by Capt. Teddy Pratt.

Trolling can be a little slow at this time of year, but if you are lucky, you may run into a wahoo or two patrolling the ledges. You will want to be in 150 to 600 feet of water running east or west. Trolling lures with bait is a good combination but using lures by themselves is alright too. Getting to the ledges off Nassau is a quick 15 to 20 minute run in most cases. In some areas, the ledges are only 500 yards off the beach and drop off quickly. For tuna or dolphin, you may want to run a further offshore.

We have been catching a few dolphin and yellowfin tuna but their season is almost gone. With trolling action being a little slow, you may want to focus on bottom fishing. There are plenty of species of snapper and grouper that you can target including strawberry grouper, black grouper, yellowtail and red snapper, as well as an assortment of other bottom feeders. My recommended bait is squid. No special technique required. Just bait your hook and drop it overboard and wait for the fish to pick at your bait, then set the hook on ‘em! Bottom fishing tackle should range from 30 pound to 100 pound test line on good spinning reels, or by hand like the natives. For deeper depths, you will want to definitely use an electric reel. A good depth finder is also a must for identifying good bottom habitat. For trolling, I recommend 50 to 80 pound tackle. When the end of October gets closer and we move into November, we should start seeing cold fronts roll in and then the wahoo season will start to kick in. We look forward to welcoming you to Nassau for a great day of fishing!
