Nassau Offshore Fishing Forecast – September 2012

As the tuna fishing season winds down in mid to late September, we still can catch a few tuna as they move further offshore. During September, we start to get into doing some fishing for some of the smaller fish in the shallows and the edge of the drop offs with lighter tackle. Break out the spinning reels for snapper, barracuda and maybe a grouper or two. You can bet it will be a lot of fun on the lighter reels and rods especially for the kids and the ladies. You can either troll or bottom fish for them. Make sure you chum up good to keep them around and feeding on the freebies. Deep dropping is also an option, which we start to do quite a bit of in September, as the offshore fishing starts to slow down. Using squid for bait is one of best baits for bottom fishing as it is easily put on the hook and the fish love it. Fishy hors d’oeuvres! When trolling (slowly) for snapper and other reef fish, we use strip ballyhoo and an assortment of our favorite lures.

During September we still give the offshore waters a try to see if we get lucky on some of the tuna that may have stayed behind. You never know, you may come across some floating debris and get lucky on some mahi-mahi or a wahoo or two.

While September may be considered a “slow” month, fishing is still pretty good considering the changes in the season. So tight lines everybody. When visiting Nassau and New Providence give Capt. Teddy a call and let’s do some “fun fishing”.
