Nassau Offshore Fishing Forecast – December 2012

The cold fronts are here and it has been pretty cool for us here in Nassau. It is an excellent sign that the wahoo are here. We have been catching a few fish in the 40 pound plus range, which is a great sign for the start of the wahoo season.

Northern winds push the bait in close to ledge. That’s where the “hoo” should be stacked up patrolling for their next meal. Make sure your tackle is in good shape and ready to take on these tiger stripped speedsters. Sharpen those hooks so you can get a good hook set because you never know when you are going to hook that “Big One”. Wire and cable leaders are a must if you want to catch these razor sharp fish, because as you know, wahoo slice mono like it is butter. Troll the ledges in 150 to 600 feet of water, use ballyhoo and lures, or just lures with cigar weights to keep the baits down while trolling at a little faster than usual to get the fish excited. Planers and downriggers are also helpful in getting your baits down to different depths as you work the water levels.

The Bahamas is chock-a-block full of wahoo at this time of year so why not mix a little Atlantis action with some wahoo action!

Tight lines everybody. See you in Nassau!
