North Eleuthera Dive Forecast – February 2012

February is a great month to dive the great sites of North Eleuthera. The water temperature is now slowly getting warmer. Still wetsuit water but you definitely can increase your bottom time. Like on land, this is the time when you can actually see the seasonal changes in the marine environment. The larger fish are more docile and everything seems even more spectacular and colorful. The visibility is still excellent and frankly is what Eleuthera is best known for: gin clear water! There is a concentration of excellent dive sites in North Eleuthera if you are interested in exploring wrecks. Near the small island of Spanish Wells is the ‘Devil’s Backbone’, an area which has many wrecks, old and modern. Also nearby is the ‘Eleuthera Train Wreck’, where the wreckage of railroad cars lay from the era of the Civil War. There is a 1919 freighter, 200 feet long nearby, in about 35 feet of water. Finally, there is a 265 foot freighter that sank in 1971 to explore in the same general area. This is a wreck diver’s paradise. The season really starts to get busy in February so I would suggest booking in advance. Also, bring as much of your own gear as you can. Dive equipment manufacturers are now making travel gear that are just as good quality but smaller and more streamline.
