June is when many Europeans make Eleuthera, and especially Harbour Island, a target destination. With water temperatures approaching 80 degrees, it is a perfect time for both adults and children to enjoy the waters for diving, snorkeling and swimming, as well as some fun training with scuba professionals. We have plenty of exciting aquatic creatures to introduce you to. Turtles, dolphins, grouper, eagle rays and reef fish abound. Diving depths range from 6 feet (2 meters) to 130 feet (40 meters) and snorkeling sites from 3 feet (1 meter) to 30 feet (10 meters) with elkhorn coral formations, lots of macro critters to see and film, as well as our friendly, but timid sharks along with stingrays, eels, lobster and tarpon to enjoy. Winds should be calmer this month and cruising to historic sites or trying some dives further away in the Current Island area (one hour boat ride) may be smoother this time of year. Areas like Preacher’s Cave, Carnarvon and Arimoroa Shipwrecks, blue holes and Hatchet Bay Caves (bats) may be adventures that people with a curious side may really enjoy! As usual, the hospitable people of North Eleuthera and Harbour Island invite you to try a rental house or resort, taste the local food, walk the pink sand beaches and be prepared to say “hi” to people that truly mean it. Cheers!
