Well, I guess that is why we call them forecasts. July was windier and wetter than we thought unfortunately. August is a great month for diving the waters of North Eleuthera. Water temperatures will hold around the 80 degree mark and remain very comfortable for any water activity. Big animals will highlight August as bottlenose dolphin will continue to be spotted cruising by Harbour Island and Spanish Wells areas and allow, more often than not, a great in water encounter. Eagle rays have been seen more regularly in very shallow waters around Harbour Island, Man Island and Current Island areas. These magnificent and friendly creatures are a real highlight whether diving or snorkeling. Tarpon continue to be seen diving along the east coast of Eleuthera and allow divers within 10 feet to enjoy the silver sheen of their body. Turtles, mainly hawksbill and green, have been abundant as well as various types of eels; from spotted and moray to purple mouthed. Stingrays such as southern, yellow and even the roughtail, are seen by our customers on a regular basis. These animals need our protection and we encourage all of you to stop harvesting or over-harvesting them to allow future generations to enjoy them and have a reason to explore our beautiful oceans.

Recently I was on an exploratory expedition in 2000 feet of water north of Spanish Wells and tried with all types of chum to attract sharks to our boat with only two small sharks (reef and silky) making an appearance after eight hours of laying a slick. Not exactly shark infested waters that the media speaks of! It always reminds me that our resources ARE limited and need watching over. So I encourage you to get active and make a dive or take some training if not yet certified and I am sure it will be a fun and exhilarating activity. When you get back your thirst and appetite will be higher and there are plenty of great restaurants and watering holes to satisfy your every desire right here on North Eleuthera.
