Fall is in full swing here in the Daytona Beach area, and as the temperatures begin to drop, the fishing is heating up! Cooler mornings and changing water temperatures are bringing plenty of action both inshore and offshore.
The inshore bite has been on fire, with snook and redfish keeping anglers busy throughout the backwaters, creeks, and around Ponce Inlet. We’re also starting to see more black drum showing up as the water cools down. Look for these fish around docks, bridges, oyster bars, and deeper channels where they’re feeding on shrimp, crabs, and other natural bait. Live shrimp, finger mullet, and cut bait are all great options this time of year. Paying attention to the tides and moving water can make a big difference, especially when targeting fish around structure.
Offshore, the ocean can get a little sporty this time of year, so finding a good weather window is important. However, on the days we can make it out, the fishing should be well worth the trip. Now is the time to start looking for wahoo as they begin showing up in better numbers. Whether you’re trolling or live baiting, focus on temperature breaks, current edges, and areas holding bait. These are all great places to start your search.
If bottom fishing is more your style, there should be plenty of opportunities to put some quality fish in the box. Triggerfish, mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, and lane snapper should all be showing up in good numbers as the fall season progresses. Working natural bottom, ledges, and wrecks with fresh cut bait or live bait can produce some excellent action. Just be sure to check current fishing regulations and seasonal closures before heading out.
As we move further into fall, keep an eye on the weather and take advantage of those calm days when they come around. Whether you’re fishing the backwaters or heading offshore out of Ponce Inlet, there’s plenty of opportunity to get on the fish.
