Offshore Report

Capt. Don McPherson

Wow! What an awesome month of fishing in June. Lots of big red snapper were caught by anglers of all ages.
July should provide a spectacular month of fishing. Red snapper season on federally permitted charter boats will be open until July 21st. Recreational anglers season is open on weekends through Labor Day weekend and includes the week of July 4th. Red snapper are being caught nearshore and offshore and will continue to be caught into July. If you are looking to do some trolling, then tie on some spoons behind planers and relax while you wait on the bite. King mackerel, Spanish mackerel and bonita are fish you may hook into as you troll. Vermillion snapper and white snapper (red porgy) are good tasty fish that can be caught usually beyond 15 miles from shore. You should find some scamp grouper, red grouper and gag grouper in deeper water beyond 160 feet.
The gag grouper bite has been a bit slow, but July may be the month that the bite improves.
Offshore trolling has been off and on with the tuna bite. Plan a trip, load the boat with good food and give it a try. July should be a good month for mahi-mahi, wahoo and marlin offshore.
As you you can see there is always something to catch off the Alabama Gulf Coast. Get on your boat and go after them. There are plenty of charter boats in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island.
