September is here and we should experience some cooler weather. The water will also be cooling which means better fishing. The trolling bite for king mackerel and Spanish mackerel should be good within about 6 miles from shore. A four-hour fishing trip will usually give you enough time to locate these fish and hook a few. Bottom fishing for vermillion snapper is a good option for catching fish you can keep. These fish can often be caught on a 6-hour trip. Red snapper and triggerfish must be released. Amberjack season will be open until October 31st. The amberjack bite has been slow in August, but we will hopefully see improvement in September. The offshore bottom fishing has been very good with catches of scamp grouper, gag grouper, red grouper, vermillion snapper, white snapper and more. Offshore trolling has been good with catches of mahi-mahi, marlin and wahoo. Tuna bite has been fair.
There are plenty of fish to catch. Whether you are a recreational angler with your own boat or anglers looking for a charter boat, September should be a great month for fishing off the Alabama Gulf Coast. As the super-hot temps will calm down somewhat it will be a great time to be on the water.
