May Brings a Surge of Trophy Snakehead Catches Across the Chesapeake
May was a big month for big Chesapeake Channa (northern snakehead) catches. Anglers submitted over 60 trophy-sized Channa—measuring 30 inches or longer—for FishMaryland invasive species awards.
Mota’s Record-Breaking Blue Peacock
On August 15, 2024, Murilo Soares Mota made history while fishing in Brazil’s Tres Marias Lake, landing a stunning 24.803 inch blue peacock bass. With this impressive catch, Mota set the IGFA All-Tackle Length World Record for the species. The record-setting fish struck while Mota was casting a lure, and after a successful fight, he measured it using an official IGFA Measuring Device before safely releasing it back into the water.

After a big rainstorm, my friend Nick and I set out to explore one of Florida's spring-fed rivers at night. The weather ended up being fantastic, and we saw an amazing array of wildlife and aquatic plants. It's always refreshing to see some of Florida's springs still lush with submerged aquatic vegetation as groundwater contamination from agricultural runoff threatens many of them with nitrogen pollution (which in turn leads to algae blooms and the springs looking murky and gross).
