Fishing in September is really fun because there is less fishing pressure, and if we get a cool front to move in, the temperature and humidity will drop a bit. When that happens, the fish bite is on! Flounder will start moving offshore in late September.
I love fishing the grass flats early in the morning using popping corks with live bait. If I don’t have live bait, I use Gulp or a D.O.A. shrimp underneath the popping cork. As the day heats up, I move to deeper water. I fish the bay’s channel markers for tripletail, sheepshead, and flounder. You can also catch Spanish mackerel and King mackerel there too.
When I think of Mexico Beach Fishing in July, I think of really awesome King fishing. King mackerel will literally leap out of the water while hitting a cigar minnow floating out when using just a hook, called flat lining a minnow. Make sure you have a steal leader and around a 7/0 circle hook while using this technique. I also use chartreuse and gold king rigs loaded with frozen cigar minnows and troll very slowly to get the rig down deep in the water.
