Hunting season is here and most people put their rods away and pick up their guns. is is a good time to perform annual maintenance on your gear, if you haven't done so already. You don't want to grab your gear during the first run of the spring, only to find your reel seized, rod corroded, and lures rusted. Here are some tips to keep your gear in tip-top shape:
The ecology of the Apalachicola River watershed is unique in many ways. At a large scale itâs a migratory pathway all the way from the Appalachian foothills of North Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico, both for animals that move intentionally, and for plants whose seeds are washed hundreds of miles downstream. On a small scale the riverâs valley and floodplain have microclimates found nowhere else -- the Steephead Ravines near the north end of the river, for example -- that provide homes for plants and animals that you donât expect to find in North Florida. The consequence of this is incredible biodiversity: Dr. Ralph Yerger of FSU counted 116 species of fish in the system, which comprises the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, and Flint Rivers. Some of these species are âendemicâ to the system, meaning that they are found nowhere else.

I told my wife I was planning to write an article about kayak fishing, but I didnât know specifically what I wanted to write about. I had spent days thinking about it. I couldnât decide whether to write about fishing for a particular species, a particular style of fishing, or rigging a kayak. They were all good topics, but none of them really inspired me. One question she asked provided me with enough answers for two articles: âWhat do you like most about kayak fishing?â she asked. âCatching fish,â was my smart aleck reply. It really all boils down to access, the water, and the fish.
On Wednesday, October 16th, over 125 anglers from around the Forgotten Coast attended a fishing seminar, hosted and sponsored by Bluewater Outriggers (BWO), which is owned and operated by the Duren family. Bluewater Outriggers is a premier sporting goods super store in the heart of Port St. Joeâs waterfront business district. The guest speakers were Capt. Rick Murphy and Capt. Jeff Page from the Florida Chevy Insider Fishing Report team out of Miami, Florida. Capt. Rick Murphy produces the famous television show for 26 weeks of the year, and is seen on Fox Sports and Sun Sports channels on TV stations all over Florida and beyond, with 800,000 to 1,000,000 viewers per week.
It is not an exaggeration to say that scuba lessons were the best gift I ever received. My parents gave me scuba lessons for Christmas in 1985 when I was fifteen years old. I was that kid that never missed a Jacques Cousteau television special, and I watched Flipper every week dreaming of being able to live a life on and under the water.
Fall is here, and with it comes squirrel, rabbit and deer (archery) seasons. Hunters need to know that mosquitoes will probably be everywhere, so repellants and thermocells are going to be a handy item to keep in the backpack. It is very important to know that if you're using repellants that contain DEET, please keep that product away from gun surfaces, as it will discolor or remove certain coatings, making for a messy cleanup or repair.
Mike, Travis, Cody and I were hunting up in northwest Florida near the Georgia state line. As we walked along a ridge late one evening, we came across a huge hole. It was about fifty feet across, and we couldnât see the bottom, so the boys started throwing rocks in to see if we could hear them hit the bottom. We couldn't hear a thing, so we looked around for something bigger to throw in. We spotted a rusty transmission from an old truck, so Mike and I dragged it to the hole and chunked it in. All of a sudden a loud crashing noise came through the brush from behind us; it was a big white Billy-goat! That goat was at full speed heading straight for the hole! It dove head first right into the bottomless pit. We looked at each other with amazement and said, âWhoa, did you see that goatâ?
