South Eleuthera Dive Forecast – October 2011

Neal Watson Jr. with a giant South Eleuthera lobster!

October is an amazing month for diving in South Eleuthera! Water temperatures are in the mid 80’s all month long and the visibility rarely drops below 100 plus feet. Luckily Hurricane Irene did virtually no damage to our reefs and only marginally affected some of our very shallow corals. Here is more good news from Irene for those lobster hunters and lovers who are limited to shallow free diving sites. From recent dives, it appears that the storm blew many of our world famous giant lobsters into much shallower waters! A true bonus! October is also an amazing month to witness brittle star’s spawning on night dives very early in the month. If you have never had the chance to enjoy a coral spawning, it is an incredible once a year opportunity. The mild southeast breeze all month helps to cool off the air, and provides some much needed relief from the heat of September. Another interesting “gift” from Hurricane Irene is that she twisted our 109 foot long wreck Sophia and made it possible (with the right training and guide) to now penetrate the wreck at the bow and exit at the stern making for an incredible dive. All this and more is waiting for you in South Eleuthera!
