South Eleuthera Dive Forecast – September 2011

September, while considered by most the off-season, is truly a hidden gem in South Eleuthera and the Bahamas in general.

September, while considered by most the off-season, is truly a hidden gem in South Eleuthera and the Bahamas in general. The water temperatures are the warmest of the year, averaging around 85 degrees. The winds are almost the mildest of the entire year, typically 10 knots or less from the southeast. These patterns combine to produce some of the greatest diving of the entire year. Additionally, due to the narrowness of the Cape, calm diving waters can be found regardless of the wind direction. South Eleuthera is known for its gin clear water, but in September, it is the absolute best.

The majority of tourists have left, so dive boats are not crowded and the mood is very casual and relaxed. Looking for diversity? South Eleuthera is famous for its diversity of dive sites, ranging from shallow reefs, where non-certified divers can snorkel, to deeper dives along the Wall, and everything in between. The marine life is brilliant and abundant, perfect for the amateur or professional underwater photographer. And, due to increased availability in the resorts and hotels during the off-season, if you are in the position to do last minute bookings, such as two weeks out or less, you can find some amazing deals on accommodations.
