March is an incredible month for underwater exploration of South Eleuthera! The Island School Cobia Cage is in full swing, with feedings twice a day, bringing in schools of 600 to700 yellowtail snapper that swarm around each diver as soon as you enter the water. At Christmas Tree Reef, two miles west of Deep Creek, our collaborative effort from Blackbeard’s Sailing Cruises, Aqua Cat Live Aboards, Ocean Fox Divers, and Cape Eleuthera Divers to develop an exciting and safe shark encounter has paid off; over a dozen resident reef and blacktip sharks have made their home near the site. On occasion, it is not uncommon to see over twenty of these beautiful creatures, along with the occasional greater hammerhead or tiger shark. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, and don’t mind a 45 minute boat ride, Tommy Point Wall is one of the most amazing sites in all of the Caribbean. Being 12 miles from the closest point of land (Powell Point), there is virtually no pressure on the eco-system, and the health of the coral and fish populations are clear to see. Vertical walls starting at 50 feet, and massive schools of migrating eagle rays and Atlantic spadefish punctuate this exciting non-stop, action-filled dive site.
