Inshore

The permit are slamming everything in the shallows of South Eleuthera this month. The fly fishing purists might not want to hear this, but they just can’t say no to live pilchards. Even on light tackle spinners, it’s such a fun fight. The bonefishing is so hot right now, it’s hard to find a guide, so book ahead of time if you are planning a trip in April. Schools numbering over a 1,000 have been recorded, and many have been tagged by the Cape Eleuthera Island School “Flats Ecology Program”. For the true giant hunter, I suggest the massive flats behind the Schooner Cays, or as always my favorite, the “Rock Sound Airport flat”. It’s never tough finding the fish locally, but make sure your guide’s not shy about burning through the gas, if you want a few double digit fish for the day instead of your usual 4 to 5 pounders. The extra fuel burned will be well worth it!

Offshore

For every fishing guide in South Eleuthera, I would like to say, I hope you have plenty of line on those big rods, because the big fish are back! April is the month for 100 pound wahoo, and 85 pound yellowfin tuna. Fish has become the local currency around South Eleuthera, and it seems like everyone is rich. The sailfish seem to be getting in the way of the dolphin and wahoo, especially around Bamboo Point. The tuna birds are being spotted 5 to 10 miles offshore during the day and all along the drop off during the evenings. As always, we suggest getting your bait as deep as you can while trolling to avoid the schoolies. The wahoo bite is a fast troll along the wall, with a simple ballyhoo rig. The big blues are still only consistent at the “Bridge”, but at 10 to15 miles from any of South Eleuthera’s marinas, it’s not far to go for some excitement.

Good luck, and save some fish for me!
