Offshore

January’s north winds can often make fishing the drop off a little rough, but it also blows all the fish into South Eleuthera. Bamboo Point is a hot spot this month for the dolphin bite. The schools are relatively small, but the fish are good sized. Expect to catch four to five dolphin per day. The most exciting fishing of the month is the massive wahoo bite, with lots of fish and good size. We prefer fresh ballyhoo with a black or pink and purple skirt draped over the nose. Most of the action is right on the edge of the drop off, usually south of Cape Eleuthera all the way to Lighthouse Point. Don’t forget about the 2012 Cape Eleuthera Wahoo Tournament taking place January 18th through 21st. For information visit www.capeeleuthera.com.

Nearshore

The grouper bite is hot right now but remember Nassau grouper season is closed. So if you are fishing deep, please remember to bring a tool to pop the swim bladders of our “national” fish. The yellowtail snapper bite is great off of Bannerman Town, near the very south end of the island and should continue well into January. We prefer to use live pilchards, but even squid or conch on an incoming tide, in about 45 to 65 feet of water will really do well. The bonefish bite is hot as always in January with plenty of large fish everywhere on the flats. The only limiting factor can be the wind this month if it blows hard from the north or northeast.
