Offshore
June will be an excellent month for dolphin. Anglers should catch as many as six on an average trip, but that can go as high as 12 to 15 on a good day; not schoolies, mind you, but eight pounds or better. Dolphin are spread out from Bamboo Point to the Lighthouse; look for weeds and birds off the wall, and you will have success. Sailfish have shown up as well, and we are starting to hear of double hook-ups at Bamboo Point on the incoming tide against the wall. Skipjacks and bait are plentiful, so you know the marlin and tuna are not far behind. When targeting tuna, be sure to be quick on the reel with stiff drag if you want to get them before the sharks get a chance to take a bite. Wahoo are still, here but down deep on a downrigger is where you’ll find them. With the arrival of all the bait, the king mackerel are starting to show up; the kings are in 70 to 100 feet of water. Water temperature is now 81 degrees and holding. Summer, here we come!
Inshore
Jack fishing is always fun this time of year because there are so many, and so many types. Use a yellow feather jig, 1/4 ounce with red thread around it, and off you go. African pompano are here and are biting plugs or dead bait. Mutton snapper on the day or night bite is best on squid or deep diving plugs. Large schools of ballyhoo have showed up in about 60 feet of water, creating a feeding frenzy for predators, namely barracuda and sharks. Not great to eat, but a darn good fight on light tackle. Night fishing with a guide and a nice bucket of chum can fill a cooler with yellowtail. Since Hurricane Irene last year, the yellowtail are running 18 to 24 inches, and you can chum them up during the day and even use a fly rod if you like.
Tight lines to all, and remember that a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work!
