Inshore
The weather and conditions for fly fishing in March are superb here in South Eleuthera! The Green Castle Flats, opposite the cemetery, are producing schools of two to three hundred bonefish very consistently; most of the fish are smaller, around 2 to 4 pounds, but the massive double-digit fish are lurking in the same flats as well. Miller’s Creek, on the ocean side of South Eleuthera, near Princess Cays, gets crazy in March. Massive bonefish are creeping out on a flowing tide, and they aren’t shy either. Rock Sound itself is full of schools of Cero and Spanish mackerel, a great fight on an 8 weight, and it’s lots of fun to stop at a school in between bonefishing spots.
Offshore
The dolphin are back, and running thick all across South Eleuthera. From Tommy Point North, all the way to the bridge south, the mahi are hitting everything you put in the water. Huge wahoo are still patrolling the dropoff of the Exuma Sound; eighty pounders are getting common this month. My favorite thing about March, however, is the arrival of the tuna! Huge schools of yellowfin and blackfin tuna have appeared. The Bridge is loaded with them, and if you can get below the schoolies, the average catch is 50 pounds or larger.
See you in South Eleuthera real soon.
