If you had to pick the best month to be guaranteed the most days of pleasant offshore conditions, May is the month to pick. The dolphin are biting during the day and the yellowfin tuna are hitting and feeding in the early mornings and evenings. The Wall is so close to shore that you have to be mindful of the tides.
The super warm water of the sounds and bights in South Eleuthera will actually spread out past the drop off. The location where the two water masses meet is where you will find the temperature/color changes you are looking for. That’s your spot! With southerly and westerly winds, the fish will “pocket” in Tommy Sound. During periods of northerly and easterly winds, the “Bridge” is where you will find the action.
If bottom fishing is your cup of tea, the mutton snapper bite is definitely on during May. A good location would be to anchor in 50 feet of water in a location no less than 300 feet from the edge of The Wall, dropping a bag of chum near sunset, and knocking the bottom with lightweight spinners and live pilchards. There is nothing more exciting than fighting a 20-plus pound mutton to the boat in the moonlight.
