August is a great month for tracking the elusive “ghosts of the flats” in South Eleuthera. The traditionally calm winds of August transform the flats into crystal clear ponds, making it super easy to catch a glimpse of the bones. The abundance of crabs hatching after the big spawning in June and July, make the “crab flies” your go to lures in August. This time of year offers unprecedented access to many of the great flats on the eastern (or windward) side of Southern Eleuthera. My personal favorite, where often the winds of winter and spring prevent fishing, is Arvida Bay. Easily one of the worst mile-and-a-half long roads on Eleuthera, but if it was easy to get to this flat, I know the fishing wouldn’t be so amazing.
